As I mentioned recently, putting our cat down brought us a profound realization about the gift of love.

In processing that experience, I am moved to share what was perhaps the greatest lesson I learned from our cat, Katniss: the art of receiving.

I have taken note of how, whenever Carol and myself would take turns brushing her at night, Katniss received that love totally and fully. There was no hesitation or holding back—she simply opened herself up to it completely.

It made me think about how important it is for us as human beings to receive just as fully when someone offers an act of love to us. Remembering how Katniss so openly accepted our care has been a powerful reminder for me to do the same.

In becoming aware of this, it is beautiful to see how the cycle of giving and receiving plays such a vital part in our lives and our overall health.

Maybe you have already noticed this same dynamic with the people or pets in your life, past or present.

I find that bringing this realization into clear, conscious focus has been a true blessing for me, and my hope is that offering it today serves as a blessing to you in turn.
